So, what pressure should my boiler be?
For most modern heating systems, your boiler pressure should usually be between 1 and 2 bar when the heating is off. Ideally, the pressure gauge should sit around 1.0 to 1.5 bar when the system is cold. When your heating is switched on, it is normal for the pressure to increase slightly as the water heats up.
There are a number of reasons why your boiler pressure may change. These include:
- Low boiler pressure – If your boiler pressure drops below around 1 bar, your heating system may not work correctly. This can happen if there is a small leak in the system, if radiators have been bled, or if the system has lost water over time. You may need to repressurise your boiler to restore the correct pressure.
- High boiler pressure – If the pressure rises above 2.5 bar, there could be too much water in the system or an issue with a component such as the expansion vessel. Your boiler may display a fault if the pressure becomes too high.
- Pressure keeps dropping – If you regularly need to repressurise your boiler, this could indicate an underlying problem. A leak or faulty component could be causing the pressure to continually fall, so it is important to have this checked by a qualified heating engineer.
